/bronze disco jumpsuit

NYC Frocktails was in early October and was a Studio 54 theme!! I ended up not being able to make it but I was in the process of making this jumpsuit to attend. I also had it in mind for my cousin’s wedding in Ottawa as well as my friend’s mom’s bday party so it was getting triple duty. I wanted something that definitely read 70s disco retro but also modern. It had to give chic and glam and extravagance. I searched the internet archives and Pinterest for MONTHS for inspiration. Nothing gave me major feels except for the below:

On first site, in my mind, it looked like palazzo pants but then I realized it was a dress. Too late! I was stuck on it being wide legged pants. I had some bronze crinkle plisse fabric in my stash that I thought would be perfect for it and I knew I had a good amount. My only concern was if I’d have enough for this exaggerated pant leg. Luckily, it was enough to make the pants wide legged but I wouldn’t have been mad at a little more drama to match this fullness. As Blanche Devareaux would say, “BIGGAH!” It had to be as wide as possible and I was limited by the fabric width. Had I had more yardage, I would’ve tried to piece in volume by adding in columns but ce la vie.

I pieced the Lydia Naomi Bubble Frock bodice with the Small Museum Tate Romper pant legs to get this mash up.

I cut the pants off a few inches below my knees but didn’t add the bottom extension until after I’d sewn the bodice to the legs so I can see exactly how much I wanted to add to have the hem hit the floor in heels. I could have used the Tate Romper pattern as the base for the whole pattern but I wanted to have a bit more structure and support and I knew that I liked the shape and support in the Bubble Frock (this being my 3rd time using the pattern and all!). I’m super happy with the result, thought it could stand to be taken up maybe 3/8 to 1/2 inch in the hem. I was having to hold up the pant legs most of the night but tis the price you pay for fashion sometimes!
