/the beauty of a simple dress and fab scraps

A simple dress with a simple story. This dress has a super simple silhouette and a great fabric will make it shine. Equally, this textured fabric doesn’t need much so that it too can shine. Historically, I’ve been scared to sew princess seams. This dress helped with that for sure! I think the fit is SO much better than darts so I’m going to be making clothing with princess seams a lot more. I do have a floral linen that would work with this silhouette as well so stay tuned!

The only alteration I had to make was to take a good amount of length out of each strap. I did a poor job of fitting before I set in the bodice lining so I had to alter after the fact. That was NOT fun. Lesson learned. Next time I make this, I’ll take the length out of the strap and scoop out the armhole so that it all fits better.

The jacket pattern is a repeat. I wanted to use a basic jacket pattern for this fabric because I was looking for a basic boxy base. I shortened the body length, made it short sleeve with fold over cuff, and left both unfinished. I also added some lace I had from JoAnn to add some soft to the hardness of the camo. I added tabs to the shoulders to cover the lace and it ended up making it look more military, which I loved!

I’d gotten this camo fabric from FabScrap in Brooklyn! I think I grabbed like 5-6 yards of it. It’s rather stiff so it can’t take sewing thru thickness or going thru it multiple times with a needle because it really pierces thru the fabric and makes holes. I’m still glad I have more of it for more simple patterns.
